SafeNet PTC is the industry's first non-vital overlay system that has Federal Railroad Administration Approval for Positive Train Control. It is designed as an overlay onto an existing CTC system which provides the vitality. The SafeNet PTC Provides the additional safety functions needed to meet the FRA new regulations.

The system is split into four segments
Locomotive Segment The Locomotive Segment consists of a Train Control Unit (TCU), tachometer, GPS, transponder reader and a Cab Display Unit (CDU) operator display. The Locomotive Segment receives information about movement authorities, temporary speed restrictions, information about mandatory directives and other data such as train length and train consist data given to the train by the dispatcher (via the Office Segment and Communications Segment). The Locomotive Segment includes the interface with locomotive control equipment (e.g. brakes, horn interface).
Wayside Segment The Wayside Segment consists of existing CTC equipment and SafeNet Wayside Interface Units (WIUs) used to monitor and report signal status. Existing equipment includes interlocking controllers, signal controllers, switch circuit controllers, track circuits, track/route hazard detectors, train defect detectors, and other field devices.
Office Segment The Office Segment subsystems include the components necessary to facilitate the dispatch and field functions for PTC. This includes issuing temporary speed restrictions, storing critical and non-critical data, providing maintenance and reporting functions, and interfacing with the Wayside Segment. The Office Segment equipment set includes: the PTC Servers running SQL databases; Office Communications Manager (OCM) running on operator workstations for Data Entry and Maintenance; a Real-time System Controller (RTC) and a manual Dispatcher Interface.
Communications Segment The Communications Segment consists of the SafeNet messaging system and two diverse wireless network technologies that provide for the exchange of data between the SafeNet Locomotive, Office, and Wayside Segments. The messaging system isolates the SafeNet application from the specifics of the various wireless network technologies and provides management, path selection, and traffic prioritization functions.
